Upper Qing Palace – A Sacred Capital of Chinese Taoism
The Upper Qing Palace served as the venue where successive Heavenly Masters preached doctrines, conferred Taoist titles, and where senior Taoist priests cultivated their minds and bodies. It enjoys reputations as the General Assembly of Taoism, the Capital of Immortals and the Place where all Deities Take Office.
Located at the eastern end of Shangqing Town on a treasured land surrounded by nine converging mountain ridges, it is embraced by streams and hills as a sacred gathering place of immortals. The classic Chinese novel Water Margin sets the origin of the 108 heroes here, and the related stories have become widely known among every household.
The present Upper Qing Palace features elegant, gentle and harmonious architectural styles, looking towering, solemn and majestic. Restored landmarks such as the Blessed Land Gate, Dismount Pavilion, Lingxing Gate, Bell and Drum Towers, Eastern Seclusion Courtyard, Demon Subduing Hall and Demon Suppressing Well reproduce the old prosperous scene with curling incense and melodious Taoist music. Together with Zhenyi Temple, Doulu Palace, Heavenly Master Mansion, Eastern Yue Palace and Marquis Liu Ancestral Temple, it forms a spectacular cluster of Taoist buildings, enriching the connotation of Taoist pilgrimage tours on Longhu Mountain.
