Immortal City – A Peerless Wonderland Overlooking Longhu Mountain
Formerly known as Immortal Rock, Immortal City is a towering giant peak bordering Luxi River. Seen from afar, its four sides are sheer and precipitous. The mountain is dotted with interconnected caves and well-like stone grottoes, shaded by dense woods and tall bamboos amid swirling mist and rosy clouds. It got its name for being a legendary dwelling of immortals since ancient times.
During the Wei and Jin dynasties, Zhang Sheng, the 4th Heavenly Master, built a temple on the mountaintop, today’s Doulu Palace, enshrining the statue of Laozi to honor his virtues. In the Xining reign of the Song Dynasty, Monk Baoyue came from Pucheng to found a temple here, which enjoyed thriving incense worship. In April 2002, an extraordinary cultural relic — a seven-layer spiritual casket — was unearthed atop the rock, engraved with the lines "Baoyue walks the righteous path, the heart abides in pure emptiness". Gu Kuang, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty, wrote Viewing Immortal City from Anren Port, portraying this place as a misty fairyland that stirs people’s imagination.
Now the Xianfeng Bridge spanning the sheer cliff and mountain trails have been fully opened. Standing on the summit, you can overlook all ninety-nine peaks of Longhu Mountain, presenting a magnificent view of vigorous mountains. As a poem goes: "Upon the lofty cloud cliff blooms a white lotus of fairyland; Lingering on the peak, the scenery outshines Penglai."
