Established in 1983, it became a national reserve in 1992 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve the same year (China’s 9th member of the World Network). It joined the East Asian–Australasian Flyway Network in 1999.
It is the world’s largest wintering ground for red-crowned cranes, with over 800 cranes wintering here annually (≈40% of the global wild population).
