Luoji Mountain is located 30 kilometers south of Xichang, the capital of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, spanning Xichang, Puge County and Dechang County. It is part of the national 4A-level scenic area combining Luoji Mountain, Lushan Mountain and Qionghai Lake.
It is regarded as the "sister mountain" of Emei Mountain. A local saying goes: Emei Mountain resembles a moth’s delicate eyebrows, while Luoji Mountain looks like the spiral coiffure of a young maiden. Luoji Mountain was one of the earliest sacred Buddhist sites in China. Historical records show that the western foothill alone housed two major halls and thirteen temples of the Caodong School of Buddhism.
Luoji Mountain is a rare well-preserved natural museum of Quaternary ancient glaciers in China. Its glacial landforms, such as horn peaks, aretes, glacial depressions and glacial lakes, are of high research value.
Its most famous sights include the Seventy-Two Peaks, multicolored lakes and tens of thousands of azalea bushes. Locally named by the Yi people, Black Dragon Pool, Yellow Dragon Pool and Five-Colored Lake are the most renowned scenic spots here.
