Pingtian Mountain National Forest Park
Located in the western suburbs of Guigang, 20 kilometres from the city centre, Pingtian Mountain National Forest Park is the only mountain-type natural scenic area within a 70-kilometre radius of Guigang. National Highways 324 and 209 run along its western side.
Covering a total area of 16.76 square kilometres, the park features mid-mountain landforms. Its main peak Dapingtian rises 1,157.8 metres above sea level, ranking as the second highest peak in southeast Guangxi. It is an ideal spot to watch sunrise and sunset, and overlook the Yujiang River Plain. The mountain ranges crisscross the park, with the terrain higher in the southeast and lower in the southwest.
The park teems with diverse flora and fauna. Rare plants such as tree fern, ironwood, camptotheca, Hainan pine and podocarpus grow here, together with 18 species of national Class II protected orchids, forming a colourful forest landscape. It is also inhabited by national Class II protected animals, including tiger frogs, Chinese soft-shell turtles, macaques, pangolins, small Indian civets and serows.
Dense forests bring fresh air rich in negative oxygen ions, earning the park the reputation of a natural air conditioner and forest oxygen bar. It serves as a great venue for scientific research, camping and field teaching, as well as a perfect resort for tourism, vacation and recreation.
Major scenic spots include alpine meadows, Fairy Maidens’ Bathing Pool, Immortal Waterfall, spectacular forest scenery, Pingtian Grand Canyon, exotic rocks and clear streams, tree fern communities, alpine tea gardens, valley rainforest, Southern Heavenly Gate, stone statues of human figures and horses, and the ruins of Huang Sanli Stockade.
The annual Pingtian Mountain Azalea Festival is held from April to May. From June to September, visitors can enjoy forest bathing, mountain climbing and other outdoor activities.
