Located in Shanyin County, Shanxi Province, New Guangwu City was first built in 1374 (the 7th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty) and reconstructed in 1575 (the 3rd year of the Wanli reign). The city wall stretches over three li in circumference.
This area has always been a strategic military stronghold. Numerous fortresses scatter along the inner and outer sides of the Great Wall, and New Guangwu City is one of them. In peacetime, soldiers stationed here engaged in farming; in wartime, they marched to battle. The fortress also functioned as a market and trading post for commercial exchanges.
