As a grand strategic pass, Shanhukou is located at the junction of three counties across Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. It served as a major gateway connecting the Central Plains with Inner Mongolia and Outer Mongolia. Endowed with highly dangerous terrain, it was a contested stronghold for military strategists throughout history.

It was also a famous tax checkpoint in ancient times. Legend has it that during its heyday in the Qing Dynasty, the daily customs revenue was extremely substantial. In addition, the ancient city ruins, Han Dynasty tomb complex and Baoning Temple in this area are all key cultural relics under provincial protection, possessing high archaeological value.
