The Sagadawa Festival, also called the Buddha Auspicious Day, is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist festival celebrated from the 13th to the 15th day of the fourth lunar month. The 15th day of the month is the core festival date. Followers of Theravada Buddhism also name it Vesak Day, meaning Full Moon Day.
It is an extraordinarily sacred day for Buddhists, commemorating three major life events of Sakyamuni Buddha: his birth, enlightenment and nirvana. In May 1990, upon the proposal of President Zhao Puchu, the Buddhist Association of China designated the 15th day of the fourth lunar month as the Buddha Memorial Day, or Buddha Auspicious Day, for Han Buddhist temples across the country. Since then, Buddhist temples nationwide hold grand celebrations and religious ceremonies on this day
