Itinerary Guide
Northern Guizhou’s beauty can be summed up as the “three cleanses”: appreciating the Red Army’s Long March legacy in Zunyi, savoring the rich national liquor in Moutai, and breathing fresh air in Chishui. Your three-day journey begins here.
Day 1
Start with a bowl of mutton noodles in the old town. Walk to the Zunyi Conference Site (Zunyi is compact). The site is a two-story brick-and-wood building blending Chinese and Western styles, built in the early 1930s. Mao Zedong’s calligraphy “Zunyi Conference Site” hangs above the main gate. Inside, a bluestone courtyard leads to the main building where the conference was held.
After visiting the site, walk 20 minutes to Red Army Hill. The Red Army Martyrs Cemetery houses the remains of Red Army soldiers found across Zunyi after 1949. The solemn cemetery features a monument inscribed with Deng Xiaoping’s calligraphy: “Eternal Glory to the Red Army Martyrs”.
After lunch, take a bus to Maocaopu, then a coach to Tongzi. Alight at Loushan Pass (fare: 12.5 yuan, ~1 hour). Admire Mao Zedong’s giant calligraphy and experience the heroism of “the mighty pass is as immovable as iron”.
Return to Zunyi in the evening. Explore Dingzikou and enjoy street food at the night market—stalls offer bean curd noodles, stinky tofu, grilled potatoes, and rice noodles.
Overnight: Zunyi City.
Day 2
Take a bus from Zhongzhuang Bus Station to Renhuai (2 hours), then a shuttle to Moutai Town. The town’s entrance is the National Liquor Gate, and its main road is National Liquor Road. Key attractions include the Moutai Distillery, the World’s Largest Liquor Bottle, the Fine Wine River, and Wugong Rock.
Cross the Yanjinhe Bridge to reach the National Liquor Gate, a traditional Chinese tower. On the hill east of the gate stands a giant Moutai bottle with a spiral staircase inside. Certified by the Shanghai Guinness World Records in June 1997 as the “largest physical advertisement”, it is known as the “World’s Largest Liquor Bottle”.
Leave Moutai Town by minibus or motorbike taxi to Xishui, following the picturesque Chishui River. Roadside railings shaped like liquor bottles mark this “hometown of liquor”. At Wugong Rock, see the 1,000-character cliff carving of “Fine Wine River” by Shao Huaze, a Guinness World Record holder.
Arrive at Bing’an Ancient Town (formerly Bing’an, renamed after a great fire). This ancient town, surrounded by the rushing Chishui River on three sides, remains isolated due to poor transport, frozen in time. Its ancient stilted houses on cliffs, two stone gates, and bluestone street preserve Ming and Qing architecture.
Day 3
Take an early minibus to Shizhangdong, which includes Shizhangdong Waterfall, Panlong Waterfall Group, Jifeiyan Waterfall Group, Renyouxi Waterfall, Xiangxi Lake, Shusun Peak, Ganoderma Rock, and an underground waterfall nearby.
At 72 meters high and 30 meters wide, Shizhangdong Waterfall is Guizhou’s second-largest, with water plunging dramatically (visible in the wet season). Lush trees, azalea forests, and alsophila groves surround the waterfall.
After a 2-hour visit, stop at Zhongdong Waterfall on the way back, then return to Lianghekou Town. Lunch, then take the 13:00 bus back to Chishui, alighting at Yanziyan in ~15 minutes. This newly developed national forest park features Yanziyan Waterfall, Pengtai Waterfall, forest trails, the Source of Life, Golden Turtle Leaping Waterfall, and an alsophila garden.
After a 3-hour visit, take the 15:00 or 16:30 return bus from Lianghekou to Chishui. Your unforgettable three-day northern Guizhou journey ends here.
