Tour Highlights: Experience the stunning scenery of northern Guizhou in Chishui; a private car ensures you don’t miss a single highlight!
Itinerary:
Day 1: Sidonggou Scenic Area → Chishui Shizhangdong Waterfall Group
Day 2: Yanziyan National Forest Park → Bing’an Ancient Town → Chishui Bamboo Sea Park → Alsophila Kingdom
Day 1
Depart early from Chishui City by private car (120–150 yuan per day, depending on your bargaining skills) for Sidonggou Scenic Area. Locals in Guizhou traditionally call waterfalls “holes”. Sidonggou refers to four tiered waterfalls formed by the Datong River’s tributaries flowing down the valley: Water Curtain Cave Waterfall, Flying Frog Rock Waterfall, Moon Bay Waterfall, and White Dragon Pool Waterfall.
Enter the valley at Minxizui (the scenic area gate), cross ancient stone bridges, walk through lush bamboo shade, pass the Longevity Turtle Rock, and after 1 km, reach the first “hole”—the Water Curtain Cave Waterfall at Green Wave Pond. Duck under the Taihuang Rock at the cave entrance to view potted landscapes behind the waterfall.
Follow the streamside path or hike upstream 800 meters to the serene Moon Bay Waterfall, which resembles a crescent moon from afar. The third waterfall is Flying Frog Rock Waterfall, with a protruding rock in the middle like a frog looking up.
The fourth, White Dragon Pool Waterfall, is the largest in the group—60 meters high and 23 meters wide, with water cascading down.
Lunch at a nearby farm restaurant. After a short rest, visit the flagship attraction: Shizhangdong Great Waterfall. Admire the majestic waterfall, boat on Xiangxi Lake, wander through the hundred-acre camellia forest, and enjoy the Danxia landscape. Note: The great waterfall is visible all day only during the July–August wet season; in other months, it can only be viewed in the morning (afternoons are for water storage and power generation).
Stay overnight near Shizhangdong Great Waterfall (farm guesthouses cost 10 to dozens of yuan; basic amenities but tasty home-cooked meals at ~7 yuan per person).
Day 2
Leave early for Yanziyan National Forest Park. Though not as wide as Shizhangdong, Yanziyan Waterfall is far taller. Hike up the mountain path beside the waterfall and loop down from the top for breathtaking views.
Next, experience the ancient tranquility of Bing’an Ancient Town. Surrounded by water on three sides and mountains on one, it perches on high cliffs along the river, with rows of wooden and bamboo buildings featuring simple, rustic architecture. Strings of red lanterns under the eaves evoke a sense of stepping back in time. Have lunch here—try hot rice cakes and crispy grilled tofu.
In the afternoon, explore the Bamboo Sea National Forest Park, with Danxia landscapes, flowing springs, waterfalls, and wilderness scenery along the way.
Enter the park and hike up the mountain path, surrounded by thick bamboo groves. Climb the Sea View Tower at the summit for panoramic views: endless bamboo forests stretch into the distance, shrouded in mist—even the finest landscape painters could not capture its beauty.
The Bamboo Sea and Alsophila Scenic Area are adjacent. In the afternoon, visit the Alsophila National Nature Reserve at the foot of the mountain. Alsophila, a “living fossil” of ancient organisms, is a tree fern from 200 million years ago, coexisting with dinosaurs. While dinosaurs are extinct, alsophila thrives here, with tall canopies like giant umbrellas by the streams, showcasing vitality.
Return to Chishui City in the evening, ending your mysterious Chishui journey. The endless bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, honest locals, and mellow rice wine will stay with you long after you leave.
Tips
Transport: Chishui is relatively inaccessible; it is easier to enter from Sichuan or Chongqing than from central Guizhou. For a hassle-free trip, self-driving or hiring a private car is recommended (no waiting for buses in Chishui City). Private car rate: ~120–150 yuan/day.
Seasonal Prep: Spring and summer bring dense mosquitoes in the bamboo forests—pack long sleeves, long pants, and mosquito repellent.
