Tangshan is a prefecture-level city in the east of Hebei Province, China. It’s a major industrial, port, and economic hub on the Bohai Sea, known as the “Phoenix City” for its rebirth after the 1976 earthquake.

The name “Tangshan” derives from Mount Tang (Dachengshan), where Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty stationed his troops in 645 AD.

Modern industrial birthplace: The Kailuan Coal Mine (1878) and China’s first standard-gauge railway (Tangshan–Xugezhuang, 1881) launched China’s industrial revolution.
