Due to geographical and other reasons, many hutongs in Beijing are not all north-south or east-west. There are also many diagonal streets, one of which is the "China Historical and Cultural Famous Street" located in the Shichahai area - Yandaixie Street. It runs northeast to southwest, starting from Di'anmen Outer Street in the east and ending at the Yinding Bridge in Houhai, with a total length of less than 300 meters. However, it is a hutong that condenses the folk customs and market scenes of old Beijing.
As for the origin of the name Yandaixie Street, one theory is that after the Manchu Qing Dynasty entered Beijing, most of the residents in the north city were banner people, who were fond of smoking dry or water pipes. As the demand for tobacco and pipes increased, many tobacco and pipe shops opened on the diagonal street, and the business grew bigger and bigger, gradually forming a street for tobacco and pipes in Beijing. Another theory is that the shape of the street resembles a tobacco pipe stem, with the east entrance resembling a pipe mouth and the west entrance turning south towards the Yinding Bridge, resembling a tobacco pipe pot. Therefore, the tobacco and pipe shops on the street, combined with the unique shape of the street, gradually named the alley "Yandaixie."
There used to be an old saying in Beijing, "Dongdan, Xisi, and Gulouqian," which referred to the three core commercial areas of the city at that time. "Gulouqian" specifically referred to Gulouqian Street, which prospered due to the Jishuitan Wharf, including the area where Yandai Xiejie is located. From the earliest tobacco and smoking accessories, to the later sales of framed calligraphy and paintings, antiques, and jade, and gradually evolving into today's distinctive street food, cultural and creative crafts, Yandai Xiejie has gone through different stages of development with the changing times.
