There is a saying that goes, "First there was Shichahai, then there was Beijing." After the Yuan Dynasty defeated the Jin Dynasty, the former capital of the Jin Dynasty in the southwest of present-day Beijing was already in ruins. Kublai Khan then used Shichahai as the center of the new "Beijing" for the entire Yuan Dynasty.

The criss-crossing hutongs around Shichahai condense the customs and traditions of old Beijing, and also connect the past, present, and future of Beijing. In history, Shichahai was not only home to many dignitaries, but also to many famous scholars and literati. After the founding of New China, Shichahai became a leisure resort and cultural paradise for the masses.

The TV drama "The Sea in Dream" chose Shichahai as the main narrative location, telling the story of the growth and fate of Beijing youth in the 1970s. With the popularity of the TV drama "The Sea in Dream", more and more people have gone to Shichahai and its surrounding areas, either to find the footsteps of characters like Xiao Chunsheng, or to embark on a journey of experiencing old Beijing customs in nostalgia.

Shichahai Ice Rink

Skating on Shichahai in winter is a childhood memory for many old Beijingers. As a TV drama that revisits the youthful years of Beijing youth in the 1970s, "The Sea in Dream" is narrated through a group of young people who meet and interact on the Shichahai Ice Rink.

The Shichahai Ice Rink is divided into two areas: Qianhai and Houhai. The total operating area is 160,000 square meters. The entire Qianhai area and the east side of Houhai are the comprehensive area, providing entertainment facilities such as single-person sleds, double-person sleds, and ice bicycles for tourists. The west side of Houhai is the speed skating area, providing ice skates for tourists to play. Whether you are a skating expert or a novice, you can find the most authentic "old Beijing winter" here!

Bell and Drum Tower

As a landmark building that frequently appears in the drama, the Bell and Drum Tower (the combined name of the Bell Tower and Drum Tower) on Di'anmenwai Street echoes each other, with Shichahai to the west and Nanluoguxiang to the east. The Bell and Drum Tower was the timekeeping center during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The Bell Tower and Drum Tower are vertically placed in front and behind each other, standing at the northern end of Beijing's central axis, and are known as "time buildings" by people.

Get off at Shichahai Station on Line 8 of the subway, and you will see the Drum Tower not far away. Walking north along the street, there is the Di'anmen Shopping Center that carries the memories of Beijing people, as well as old and famous restaurants with different flavors and cuisines such as Ma Kai Restaurant, Donglaishun Restaurant, and Xi'an Restaurant.

There are still many memorable food places near the Drum Tower. Zhao Fu Ji Food Store on Zhao Fu Street has been famous for many years. This state-owned food store, established in 1956, still retains a decor style full of nostalgia. The large soy sauce jar, pickled vegetable jar, and dark brown wooden old-fashioned counter and scale in the store bring people's memories back to the past.

Nanluogu Xiang

Nanluogu Xiang is located in the Jiaodaokou area on the east side of Beijing's central axis. It starts from Gulou East Street in the north and ends at Ping'an Street in the south. It is 8 meters wide and 787 meters long. It was built at the same time as the Yuan Dynasty and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Beijing with a history of more than 740 years.

There are eight Hutongs arranged in a neat "fishbone shape" on the east and west sides of Nanluogu Xiang, which is the only complete and largest chessboard-style traditional residential area in China that preserves the courtyard texture of the Yuan Dynasty, with the highest grade and the richest resources. It is also a street full of old Beijing flavor.

The Nanluogu Xiang area has many food and snack shops. The distinctive food shops such as Yaoji Fried Liver and Fangzhuan Factory Fried Sauce Noodles that appeared in the drama are all located here, and tourists who come here can enjoy a feast.

Nanluogu Xiang was also once a gathering place for dignitaries, cultural celebrities, and military leaders. Hong Chengchou and Senggelinqin, two important officials in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, as well as Jin Yunpeng, a warlord in the Beiyang government, traditional Chinese painting master Qi Baishi, and literary giant Mao Dun in modern times, were all residents here.

No. 39 courtyard of Mianhua Hutong was the former residence of Jin Yunpeng; No. 7 Houyuan Ensi Hutong was once Chiang Kai-shek's temporary residence and was originally the mansion of Prince Qing's second son, Zaiju; No. 13 Houyuan Ensi Hutong was Mao Dun's former residence; No. 13 Yuer Hutong was the former residence of traditional Chinese painting master Qi Baishi; No. 35 and 37 Maor Hutong were the maternal family courtyard of the last empress Wanrong...

As a historical and cultural preservation district, Nanluogu Xiang not only preserves the long history of Hutongs and quadrangle courtyards, but also contains rich humanistic historical imprints due to the existence of these celebrity residences.

Beiluogu Xiang

When it comes to old Beijing, besides Nanluogu Xiang, you should also know about Beiluogu Xiang. Several small hutongs extend on both sides of Nanluogu Xiang and Beiluogu Xiang, together forming one of the oldest neighborhoods in Beijing, which was once a gathering place for the wealthy and powerful. Nanluogu Xiang and Beiluogu Xiang are on a straight line, with Beiluogu Xiang slightly longer at over 800 meters and Nanluogu Xiang at over 700 meters, totaling about 1.5 kilometers in length.

Beiluogu Xiang belonged to the Xianghuang Banner in the Qing Dynasty and was named after the common people's Luguoxiang, which means "drum and gong alley." Another theory is that the name comes from the many drum and gong shops in the area, which is north of Gulou East Street. It has been called by this name since the Republic of China.

Beiluogu Xiang starts from Andingmen West Street in the north and ends at Gulou East Street in the south, with only one street separating it from Nanluogu Xiang. Compared to the already well-known Nanluogu Xiang, Beiluogu Xiang has not yet been invaded by crowded shops and crowds of people. It is more suitable for people who like peace and quiet to stroll around, with its walls made of blue bricks, closed doors, abandoned bicycles, and various flower racks.

Yandaixie Street

Due to geographical and other reasons, many hutongs in Beijing are not all north-south or east-west. There are also many diagonal streets, one of which is the "China Historical and Cultural Famous Street" located in the Shichahai area - Yandaixie Street. It runs northeast to southwest, starting from Di'anmen Outer Street in the east and ending at the Yinding Bridge in Houhai, with a total length of less than 300 meters. However, it is a hutong that condenses the folk customs and market scenes of old Beijing.

As for the origin of the name Yandaixie Street, one theory is that after the Manchu Qing Dynasty entered Beijing, most of the residents in the north city were banner people, who were fond of smoking dry or water pipes. As the demand for tobacco and pipes increased, many tobacco and pipe shops opened on the diagonal street, and the business grew bigger and bigger, gradually forming a street for tobacco and pipes in Beijing. Another theory is that the shape of the street resembles a tobacco pipe stem, with the east entrance resembling a pipe mouth and the west entrance turning south towards the Yinding Bridge, resembling a tobacco pipe pot. Therefore, the tobacco and pipe shops on the street, combined with the unique shape of the street, gradually named the alley "Yandaixie."

There used to be an old saying in Beijing, "Dongdan, Xisi, and Gulouqian," which referred to the three core commercial areas of the city at that time. "Gulouqian" specifically referred to Gulouqian Street, which prospered due to the Jishuitan Wharf, including the area where Yandai Xiejie is located. From the earliest tobacco and smoking accessories, to the later sales of framed calligraphy and paintings, antiques, and jade, and gradually evolving into today's distinctive street food, cultural and creative crafts, Yandai Xiejie has gone through different stages of development with the changing times.
