Nourishing the Stomach during Minor Cold

As the weather gets colder, more people go to the hospital for stomach diseases. With the fastening pace of life and rapidly changing weather, the rate of contracting stomach diseases has increased. The change in climate characterized by the weather suddenly turning cold and the temperature dropping sharply will directly stimulate the human body and upset the gastrointestinal function to influence the regular digestion and absorption. Therefore, during this season, Chinese people will make more effort to protect their stomach and intestines.

First, avoid raw or cold food.

The stomach is very sensitive and easily stimulated by cold and raw food in the cold weather. The irregular contraction of the stomach caused by cold food may lead to a loss of appetite, or even vomiting, and reduce its resistibility. Spicy food is also an irritant. To have too much may cause the occurrence of acute gastritis.

Second, have regular meals.

Modern people suffer from ever-increasing pressure, and are often too busy to eat. Having meals irregularly, however, may cause abnormal secretions of gastric acid and increase the burdens of the stomach. Therefore, the best way to protect the stomach is to eat regularly every day.

Third, have more soft food rather than hard food.

People suffering from stomach diseases know clearly that when the stomach is sensitive, to have some “hard” food such as fish or meat may result in discomfort. Thus, porridge, noodles or hot milk are better choices in this season. In addition, the cooking methods also need to change to steaming, boiling, braising, or stewing.

Forth, choose proper foods.

To keep the stomach warm, Chinese people choose foods such as millet, rice, mutton, ginger, black beans, and large dates. People suffering from irregular secretions of stomach acid eat less of foods that cause swelling pains in the stomach, such as corn, leeks, potatoes, beans, etc., and have no more concentrated broth or acidic foods such as dairy products, starches, etc. Even the consumption of salt should be controlled.

Fifth, get more exercise.

To keep healthy, people need to do more exercise to fight against the invasion of diseases and protect their stomachs. At the same time, it is important to keep the stomach warm by wearing long clothes.
