The earliest kites were not toys but were used as military reconnaissance tools. There were also historical records of ranging, danger crossing and manned purpose.
Kites were used as a tool for communication and signals for help in the Northern and Southern Dynasties. During the war between Han and Chu in the Han Dynasty, Han Xin had made a large kite installed with bamboo whistle and bowstring. He flied the kite in Chu camp at night and made strange noise to break the morale of Chu army.
In the Tang Dynasty, Kites were gradually transformed into entertainment and were released in court.
In the Song Dynasty, Flying kites became an activity of exercising. On Tomb-Sweeping Day, after the kites were flown high and far, people cut the string to allow the kite to take away a year of misfortune. While in the Ming Dynasty, Kites carry explosives with them.
Kite festival is a popular form of entertainment in Beijing. Cosponsored by Beijing Sports Bureau, Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (BPAFFC), under the theme "Release the Hope, Release the Dream", the 2018 Beijing International Kite Festival was held at Beijing Expo Garden on April 26.
