Preventing Autumn Weariness

There is a saying which goes, “People tend to feel sleepy in spring, doze in summer and feel tired in autumn.” As the weather becomes cool, many people will feel languid and weary. This is the “autumn weariness”. It is a natural phenomenon. During the period of End of Heat, the Ying and Yang in the human body begin to change like nature.

Autumn weariness is a sign that the human body needs rest. The fresh air and cool weather in autumn make people feel comfortable, but why do people feel weary? That’s because people have consumed excessive energy in the summer. Although people sweat less in autumn, the generation and diffusion of body heat, and the water-electrolyte metabolism have gradually returned to balance. The human body has entered a period of rest and reorganization. Some potential symptoms will appear and people often feel weary.

Four preventative measures against autumn weariness:

First, have enough sleep. Daytime is long while night is short in summer. And the weather is hot and sweltering. Many people cannot get enough sleep. After End of Heat, it’s better to go to bed before 10 p.m. and get up early in the morning. Having enough sleep can prevent people from feeling sleepy while at work. If conditions permit, take a nap at noon.

Second, eat a bland diet. People should eat a bland and nutritious diet. Eat less or no pungent or broiled food including peppers, raw gingers, and scallions. According to Chinese traditional medicine, these foods can worsen autumn-dryness disease. Eat more eggs, fish and bean products to increase the ingestion of protein. Don’t eat greasy food containing acid, which will make people feel sleepy and tired. Eating more vegetables and fruit as well as drinking more water can help metabolize the acid that makes people feel sleepy and tired.

Third, do more exercises. Develop the habit of doing exercise in the morning or evening. Good physical ability can help people overcome feeling unwell. 1. Sports such as hiking, walking and exercising can be helpful for recovering from fatigue. 2. Stretching is also helpful.

Fourth, keep plants indoor. Autumn weariness has something to do with lack of oxygen. Therefore, putting some plants indoors can generate more oxygen. Chlorophytum comosum is a good choice.
