During the Yuan Dynasty, livestock fairs were held here. After the Ming Dynasty, many mutton shops were opened, famous for low price and high quality. Such being the case, this alley was named as Yangtou (Mutton) Hutong.
As several centuries have passed, no one has expected this alley, wining its reputation due to mutton trade, has emerged as a jewelry street in the 1990s. Jewelry shops here sell quality, yet economic products, because owners do not bother themselves charging high prices since buyers are mostly professional. It is said that the prices of jewelries sold here are much less than a half of those sold in shopping malls.
Visitors may often encounter the seniors wearing presbyopic glasses and holding magnifying ones, seeking for hidden treasures.

Menkuang Hutong- Famous for Snacks

Located in the Qianmenwai Street, Menkuang Hutong stands as the well-known snack street of ancient Beijing. It attracts hundreds of thousands of Beijing natives to have a bite of delicacies like Niangao with Bean-paste of the Niangao King, Fried Huoshao of the Tongyi Restaurant, Dalian Huoshao of the Xiangrui, and Sauce Beef of Fushunzhai.
In 1985, the descendants of Feng reopened Feng's Boiled Tripe Restaurant in Menkuang Hutong. Since then, the time-honored brands such as Ruiminglou and Yueshengzhai have also settled here. Therefore, previous prosperity of this hutong and Dashilar Street has been gradually restored.
Baihua Shenchu Hutong-A Complex of Artistic Style

Baihua Shenchu Hutong boasts the most elegant name in Beijing allies, which means in the deep of a flower sea. Countless doorplate photos of “Baihua Shenchu” have been used by newspapers and magazines.
“The hutong is narrow yet long”, Lao She describes it as such. Walls on both sides are built with rubbles. With little sunlight on the south wall, a thin layer of green moss spreads and some silver snail trails can be hardly found in the higher corner. Walking further and deeper, you will find that roads here get wider, but walls on both sides are more broken.” The short film “Baihua Shenchu”, which is “100 Flowers Hidden Deep” in English, is a segment of the “Ten Minutes Older” directed by Chen Kaige.
The Baihua Studio is located in No. 16, Baihua Shenchu Hutong, Xinjiekou. It is one of the earliest recording studios in Beijing, gathering a number of musicians who came here for music dreams. It is also the cradle of numerous rock music albums and demos.
