For generations, China has had a tradition of building pagodas by the river. The Yongding River is the mother river of Beijing, and Eagle Mountain is the last mountain through which the river flows. Therefore, the Yongding Pagoda was built on top of the Eagle Mountain with the meaning of eternal stability and peace. The courtyard of Yongding Pagoda is square and quadrilateral, and the pagoda is an octagonal nine-story wooden pagoda in the Liao and Jin styles, which means "harmony in all directions and eternal stability". Besides, the number 9 represents endlessness and ultimate in Chinese traditional culture.
