Shanghai Chen Yun Memorial Hall was built on the site of previous Former Residence of Chen Yun and Qingpu Revolutionary History Memorial Hall. Located in Liantang Town of Qingpu District, the birthplace of Chen Yun, it is a biographical exhibition hall, which displays the life of Chen Yun and the glorious history of the socialist revolution of the Qingpu people. The memorial hall was dedicated to Chen in 2000, on the 95th anniversary of Chen's birth. A statue was established on the square in front of the memorial hall in 2005 which marks the centurial anniversary of his birth.
Chen Yun (1905 - 1995) was a great Chinese politician, proletarian revolutionary, eminent Marxist, as well as one of the most important founding fathers of the PRC. Being the inaugurator and the founder of Chinese economic construction, he won great respect and love from the Chinese people due to his marvelous contributions to China in his lifetime.
Chen Yun Memorial Hall consists of five sections, including the Main Hall, Chen's Former Residence, Historical Relics Exhibition Hall, Handwriting Tablets Gallery and Creative Cultural Street.
Main Hall
Behind the bronze statue stands the three-storey Main Hall. The underground floor introduces the revolutionary history of the Qingpu people under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. Four exhibition halls occupying the first and second floors display in chronological order the documents, pictures and historical objects reflecting the life of the great man Chen Yun.
Former Residence
Chen Yun's Former Residence lies to the north of the Main Hall. Chen had to live with his uncle after his parents’ death, so it is actually his uncle’s house. It is simple but solemn in its original appearance, in the style of a folk house usually seen in South China, constructed of timber. The road is paved with flagstones and a limpid river flows by the doorway. What a small tranquil world!
Historical Relics Exhibition Hall
Historical Relics Exhibition Hall, a two-storey building open to the public in 2015, sits to the east of the Main Hall. The first part is about his simple and frugal life with an eye-catching old Hongqi car. He never let his family use the car since it was a public asset and could be used for personal business. The second part is about his friends and family while the third one involves study and reading. The fourth part shows his hobbies such as storytelling and ballad singing, calligraphy, and photography. He is said to begin to learn calligraphy when he was in his eighties, from which we can see his spirit of life-long learning. They even recreate Chen's meeting room, study and bedroom that he once used in Beijing. Relics include his suitcase, pencils, reading notes, Chinese lute, and excerpts from his writings. These precious historical materials bring visitors back to the age when Chen Yun was alive, allowing us to experience his wide and deep thoughts and upright personality.
Handwriting Tablets Gallery
This gallery is located to the southwest of the Main Hall, displaying Chen’s original calligraphy and nearly one hundred inscriptions of pertinent appraisals about Chen by Chinese state leaders.
Creative Cultural Street
On the western and eastern sides of Chen’s Former Residence is Creative Cultural Street, which has a unique flavor of a water town in south China. This cultural street comprises six sections.
The first one is Bronze Statue Hall, housing nearly sixty statues of China’s great historical leaders. The second is Guju Dock from which Chen left for downtown Shanghai with his teacher Zhang. A statue was erected to memorialize them. There are two boats by which visitors can reach his primary school and the place where Chen conducted research. Another one is Arts Hall whose theme is storytelling and ballad singing in the Suzhou dialect. It shows Chen’s deep love for this fork art. The next is the projection room where visitors are presented with a six-minute movie about the whole life of Chen Yun. The fifth is Changchunyuan, a tea house where artists performed and which was frequently visited by Chen Yun. It was reproduced according to aged locals’ memories and descriptions. Now visitors can drink a cup of tea while listening to storytelling and ballad singing. The last section is Abacus Hall, which was designed especially to memorialize Chen Yun in that he was good at the abacus.

How to get to Chen Yun Memorial Hall
It takes 3 hours from downtown Shanghai to Chen Yun Memorial Hall, which is located in Qingpu District, 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of the city center.
1. Take metro line 9 to Zuibaichi Station and leave the station from Exit 3. Walk 300 meters (330 yards) north to a crossing and turn west to find the bus stop of Songhuilu Renminnanlu. Then take bus Songlian Special Line to its terminal Liantang Bus Station. Walk 600 meters (660 yards) south to find the memorial hall on the west.
2. Take metro line 2 or line 10 to Hongqiao Railway Station, exit from Exit F. Find the nearby bus stop of Hongqiao West Transport Hub, and take Honglian Bus Line to its terminal Liantang Bus Station.
3. From the bus stop of Pu'anlu Yan'andonglu near People's Square in the city center of Shanghai, one can take bus Huzhu Express Line to Huqingping Gonglu Caoyinglu Station. Transfer to Qingfeng Special Line and get off at Liantang Bus Station.
