As the first professional museum focuses on automobiles in China, Shanghai Auto Museum demonstrates the over one hundred years of cars’ development in its three pavilions dedicated respectively to history, collection and automotive exploration as well as a zone for temporary exhibitions.

The museum, located in the Shanghai Auto Expo Park at Anting Town of Jiading District, covers a total area of 1.17 hectares (2.89 acres). If you are a car fancier and are interested in auto history, Shanghai Auto Museum will be a feast for your eyes.

1F – History Pavilion
The History Pavilion is located on the first floor and depicts significant events in the development of automobiles in eight theme halls by means of vehicle models, pictures, and texts. The over 20 elaborately-selected classic cars on display there vividly show how cars changed human’s life.

2F – Collection Pavilion
The Collection Pavilion is the essence of Shanghai Auto Museum. At the entrance, there are several rows of delicate vehicle models. Continuing forward, you can see nearly 40 antique cars in various bright colors and some of them are with bizarre appearance. The cars cover about 20 well-known automobile brands in the US and Europe between 1902 and 1977. Among them, the most treasured exhibits are the three-wheeled Benz Patent-Motorwagen from the 19th century, Rolls-Royce Phantom from the 1930s, the cute Volkswagen Multivan from the 1950s, and the BMW Isetta from the 1960s.

In addition, there are more than 30 fueling equipment exhibits, ranging from the hand oil pump to the dial oil pump, fully illustrating the development of automobile fueling stations.

3F – Automotive Exploration Pavilion
The Automotive Exploration Pavilion on the third floor focuses on automotive popular science. Young people and automotive enthusiasts can go there to learn the history, culture and science of automobiles. Visitors can see a Volkswagen car dissected into several parts to know about the internal structure of cars. They can also learn to design and assemble cars or experience a simulative drive. A telecontrolled racing car is available for fun, at the cost of CNY 15 for eight minutes.

Tips: There is a souvenir counter on the ground floor selling automobile models at a reasonable price. And a café can be found on the first floor providing drinks. However, there is no restaurant at present, so visitors had better prepare some food.
