Located on Changning Road in the Changning District, the Shanghai Zhongshan Park occupies 214,200 square meters (53 acres). Built in 1914, the park first served as the personal garden of James Hogg, a land agent, and was originally named "Jessfield Park". It was renamed "Zhongshan Park" in 1941 in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan is his Chinese name), a pioneer in Chinese democratic revolution. As a famous park in downtown Shanghai, the park combines English-style landscapes with the architectural style of classic Chinese gardens. Inside the park, there are more than 30,000 trees of 260 species. The four dominant flowers are peonies, cherry blossoms, Chinese roses, and sweet osmanthus. Because of the various plants, the air is quite fragrant.

The Shanghai Zhongshan Park is famous for its twelve scenic spots, including the South Gate, the Peony Garden, the Chen Family Pool, the Great Lawn, the Chinese Rose Garden, the Lake of Mandarin Ducks, the Lotus Pond, the Hill and Water Garden, the Big Plane Tree, the White Marble Pavilion, the Great Stone Bridge, and the relic of the rear gate. Among these fascinating scenic spots, the White Marble Pavilion, the Great Lawn, the Big Plane Tree, and the Great Stone Bridge are must-see attractions.

White Marble Pavilion
The White Marble Pavilion in Zhongshan Park was moved to the current location in 1935. It was listed as a modern architecture under municipal protection in 1999. The pavilion is square-shaped, with a length of 18 meters (20 yards), a width of 5 meters (5 yards) and a height of 4 meters (13 feet). Built in western classic style, the pavilion includes white pillars, a stone wall, balusters, steps, and stone sculptures. It looks very spectacular and elegant, and the artistic value of the pavilion is beyond price.

Great Lawn
Located to the south of the White Marble Pavilion, the Great Lawn is the largest of the six lawns in Zhongshan Park. It covers a total area of 8,000 square meters (2 acres). The lawn is surrounded by the camphor forest, oleander forest, bamboo forest, cedar forest, and ginkgo trees. Tourists can take a deep breath here while lying on the soft grass at their leisure.

Big Plane Tree
Standing at the northwestern corner of Zhongshan Park, the Big Plane Tree is more than 130 years old, with a height of about 30 meters (98 feet) and a girth of 5 meters (5 feet). It was recorded in a newspaper that the plane tree was presented to James Hogg by Thomas Hanbury, an Italian knight in 1866. In spite of surviving for 130 years, the old plane tree is very exuberant and strong. Tourists can sit in the shade, relaxed and cool.

Great Stone Bridge
Built in September 1959, the Great Stone Bridge spans the Chen Family Pool. It measure 4 meters (13 feet) in height and 20 meters (22 yards) in length. To the east of the bridge is the camphor forest, while to the west is a large square. An island at the center of the pool is located to the north of the bridge and the Dongni Mountain Scenic Area is to the south of the bridge.
