Situated in central Shanxi, Pingyao County is 60 miles (95 kilometers) southwest of Taiyuan, 380 miles (610 kilometers) southwest of Beijing and 340 miles (550 kilometers) northeast of Xi'an. Serviced by five transportation arteries (the Beijing-Pingyao and Pingyao - Xi'an Railways, Datong-Puzhou Railway, No.108 National Highway and Datong-Yuncheng Highway,) Pingyao now has a convenient transport system. Tourists can easily get there from other places.

So far, there is no airport in this county. If you want to go there by air, the Taiyuan Wusu Airport(TYN) which is about 55 miles (90 kilometers) away may be the best choice. After arriving at the Wusu airport, you have two ways to get to there: by long-distance bus or by train.
By Long-distance Bus:
Route: Taiyuan Wusu Airport→Jiannan Bus Station → Pingyao
To get to Jiannan Bus Station, Airport Shuttle Bus Line 1, Bus No.201 or 901 is available. Or you can take a taxi. The cab fare is about CNY 20. In the Jiannan Bus Station, there are lots of buses heading for the destination from 07:30 to 19:00 with an interval of 15 to 20 minutes. It takes about 2 hours on the way.
By Train:
Route 1: Taiyuan Wusu Airport→ Taiyuan Railway Station→ Pingyao
You can take airport shuttle bus line 1 or public bus 901 to the Railway Station. Or you can choose to take a taxi. The cab fare is CNY 30 to 40. After arriving, there are twelve trains that can take you to the ancient city directly. The duration is about 2 hours.
Rout 2: Taiyuan Wusu Airport→ Taiyuan South Railway Station→ Pingyao
Take bus no.201 to get to South Station first. Then take direct bullet train to the Old City; there are 17 of them every day; the duration is about 30 to 40 minutes.
Train
There are two railway stations servicing the ancient city.
Pingyao Railway Station is situated in the Zhongdu Road not far away from the West Gate of the Old City. You can easily get into the Old City as soon as arriving there. Ordinary trains running to/from large cities like Beijing, Chengdu, Xi'an, Chongqing and Taiyuan are available in this station. In this station, there are battery cars running to the Old City. It charges CNY 5 to 10 per person per time.
Located to the southwest of the old city, Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station is a station specialized in high speed trains. First opened to public in 2014, tourists can take bus no.108 to get to the Old City directly. Besides, this station also operates high speed lines to/from Xi'an North Station and Beijing West Station.

Long-distance Bus
Long-distance Bus Station is located about one mile northeast of the Railway Station. Buses here mainly head for Taiyuan and nearby counties. Here is some detail information:

Transportation to Qiao Family Compound
1. Tourists can take long-distance bus to Taiyuan, and get off at Qiao Family Compound directly.
2. Hiring a private car to the destination also brings lots of convenience to tourists. It takes around an hour on the way. The fare is about CNY 100.

Within the old city, the transportation is quite various and convenient too. Various labor-saving vehicles, like city bus, battery car or bicycle are ready there for your choice. The old city is not very large. If you are energetic or you have enough time, it is good to go around the city on foot and you may get a closer vision and deeper understanding of this ancient city.

In the Old City, there are more than 15 bus routes. Among them, bus no.1, 3, 102, 103 and 108 are popular ones that can take tourists to major transportation hubs and scenic areas.

Taxi
This county has more than 100 taxis nowadays that can bring a lot of convenience for tourists. However, they are not allowed inside the Ancient City and one needs to get on and off outside.

Bicycle
Since the Old City is not very large, it is great to go around by bicycle. Rental bicycles are available at Bicycle Rental Center near the North Gate (08:00-18:00) and in most of the hostels. Beside rental fares, tourists need to prepare a deposit of CNY 300 to 500 according to the type of bicycle (normal bicycle or tandem bicycle). The reference prices are the following.

Battery Car
Battery car can be found almost everywhere in the Old City. It costs about CNY 75 per person for a complete route. If tourists just want to visit one scenic spot, the fare is CNY 30. The hourly service is also available. It costs CNY 30 for 2 hours and CNY 10 per additional hour. Besides, tourists can hire a private battery car; the fare is around CNY 120 for 8 hours.
There are three sightseeing routes of the battery car.

Rickshaw
Rickshaws add much air of antique to the Old City. Many of the rickshaw men even wear the ancient costume to provide a feeling of reality in the ancient time to match with this ancient city. Most of the rickshaw men are local people who are familiar with the ancient city quite well. The fare is CNY 150 to 200 for one day.
