Zhenjue Temple, commonly called Five Pagoda Temple by local people, is a Ming dynasty Buddhist temple located in Haidian District of Beijing. The temple is named after the five pagodas in the temple built during the reign of the Chenghua Emperor of the Ming Dynasty in 1473.
The whole building is comprised of five pagodas and a square foundation called Vajra (diamond) throne. It is constructed from bricks and white marble at a total height of 17 meters. All four walls of the foundations are decorated with carving of the one thousand sagacious Buddhas arranged in rows as well as Buddhist symbols (such as dharma wheels), animals (elephants and peacocks) and floral designs. Besides the marble construction of the diamond throne pagoda, the temple complex also contained a number of wooden buildings; at least six halls were present during the times of the Ming dynasty.
There are at least six temples containing a "diamond throne pagoda" in China. The Beijing Zhenjue Temple is the oldest and most beautiful diamond throne pagoda of these buildings. Other five temples are Temple of the Azure Clouds in Beijing, Yellow Temple in Beijing, Five Pagoda Temple in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, Miaozhan Temple in Kunming, Yunnan Province and Guanghui Temple in Zhengding, Hebei Province.
At present, the temple houses the Beijing Art Museum of Stone Carvings. It is an ideal place to appreciate the splendid history of Buddhism and architecture in China.
