Wanning bridge is located on the central axis of Beijing, north to Di 'an Gate and south to Drum Tower, also known as Houmen Bridge or Haizi Bridge. It was built in the Yuan Dynasty with the original name of Wanning Bridge. As the important water channel on the Tonghui River, it was also the beginning of the canal transportation in the Yuan Dynasty. Wanning Bridge was built in the Yuan Dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. Located in the north of the Di’anmen which is dubbed the “Houmen (back door)”, Wanning Bridge is also called “Houmen Bridge”. Four Fenshuishou (chimerical creatures said to redirect flood in old times) fully covered with scales under the mottled bridge built in the Yuan Dynasty and a tablet carved with “Ruins of Canal Wharf” beside the river showing that it was the Canal wharf connecting the Yuan Canal and Jishuitan (a lake) in the heart of Beijing. Both are single-arch white marble stone bridges, Wanning Bridge is larger than Yinding Bridge, featuring a length of 20-plus meters and a width of 10-plus meters. The bridge floor is paved with flagstones; the two sides are white marble guardrails carved with lotus and vases. The watercourse under the bridge is about 34.6 meters long and around 17 meters wide. The arch is about 3.5 meters high. 6 stone Zhenshuishou (the same as Fenshuishou) in the Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, symbolizing the wish of avoiding floods, erect at the east and west sides of the bridge as well as the river banks. Wanning Bridge is a bridge connecting the two sides as well as a floodgate controlling the water level.
