Lu Xun was a leading figure of modern Chinese literature. Writing in Vernacular Chinese as well as Classical Chinese, Lu Xun was a short story writer, editor, translator, literary critic, essayist, poet, and designer. His small courtyard is among one of the attractions of the Lu Xun Museum. Lu Xun’s Former Residence, which is also inside the museum, was bought by Lu Xun at the end of 1923. The residence was then transformed by Lu Xun himself into a quadrangle courtyard in the spring of 1924. The residence itself and its layout were both a demonstration of simplicity. The residence depicts the great writer’s life in detail and also witnessed his great achievements.
The museum houses over 70,000 collections, including relics and books. In addition to the manuscripts, lifetime materials, collected books, stone tablet rubbings from Tibet, letters from friends in Tibet, etc. of Lu Xun, the museum also contains a large collection of artworks by those historical figures during the period of new cultural movement like Xu Guangping, Zhou Zuoren, Zhou Jianren, Qian Xuantong, Qu Qiubai, Xiao Hong, Ye Zi, et al., and numerous prints by famous artists home and abroad.
