Shao Piaoping was a journalist, an author and a political activist in China during the 19th century.

Born in Jinhua in the province of Zhejiang, Shao spent most of his life pursuing his aspirations for journalism. "To die as a journalist" was his lifetime motto. Shao contributed to the development of journalism in China through efforts such as founding the influential newspaper, Jingbao (京報). To the north of the bustling Hufangqiao Street, hidden in the narrow Weiran Hutong are the residence of a past journalist and his press office standing loftily from the rest. The residence is a two-storey building combined with both traditional Chinese and western styles. The gate of the residence is guarded with two pillars of typical European style. Perched at the top of the gate is a sightseeing balcony. The building served as both Shao Piaoping’s residence and his press office. Hanging on the front gate of the building displays the character “Jingbao Office” inscribed by Shao Piaoping himself.

Facing west, the residence now looks a bit shabby. Though it is only a few steps away from the busy Luomashi Street, it still seems like that the place is away from all the hustle and bustle. The place is lit up even more with the calling of vendors and giggling of children permeating in the gentle breeze in spring.
