Zhengyang Bookstore is a unique bookstore in downtown Beijing. You can find it under a striking ancient pagoda of the Yuan Dynasty at the bustling Xisi intersection. The Pagoda of Monk Wansong, an antique and elegant nine-storey octagonal pagoda, is the only remaining brick pagoda in the inner city of Beijing. It was quadrangle dwellings filled with old stuffs like gate piers, door planks, tables and chairs. There are shelves of old books inside the courtyard.This courtyard is exactly where Zhengyang Bookstore is located. Many Beijing culture enthusiasts prefer to call it “a bookstore with Beijing flavor”. The store keeps thousands of volumes on the history and culture of Beijing. Cui Yong has collected over the years. It also boasts valuable materials that cannot be found in a lot of libraries or archives, earning it a unique fame as the only bookstore with the most specialized collection. For many people in Beijing, it means more than just a bookstore, but a place for nostalgia, because “many things that have disappeared in old Beijing can be found only here.”
