Built in 1952 and located northwest of Taoran Bridge along the Second South Ring Road of Beijing, Taoranting Park is a modern city garden which combines ancient and modern garden building arts. It was the first built modern garden in the capital city of China---Beijing, after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It is a holy land in Beijing. Taoranting Park covers an area of 56.56 hectares with 16.15 hectares occupied by water, is a well-known historical and cultural park in Beijing and has been rated among the national AAAA scenic spots. Inside the park trees are luxuriant, flowers and grass are lush, and pavilions and rockeries are placed in perfect positions, and all this makes the park scenery glamorous. Although this park was constructed in 1952, it houses a nunnery named Ci Bei An (literal meaning: a nunnery of benevolence), which was erected during China’s Yuan dynasty and has witnessed more than 700 years of historical changes of China. During the time between Qing dynasty’s Emperor Kangxi and Daoguang, this area served as a must-go place for scholars coming to Beijing from across the country. Around the time when the famed May Fourth Movement took place, Li Dazhao, Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, the founders and leaders of the Communist Party of China visited this area in different years conducting their revolutionary activities.
