Haikou

Haikou, the capital city of Hainan province, lies in the north of Hainan Island. It borders the Qiongzhou Strait in the north, and is separated from the mainland for about 18 nautical miles. It is adjacent to Ding’an county in the south and Chengmai county in the west. 

The city covers a total area of 3,119 square kilometers, with 2,289 sq km of land area and 830 sq km of sea area. Haikou has jurisdiction over the four districts of Xiuying, Longhua, Qiongshan, and Meilan. It has 21 community streets, 22 towns, 211 communities, and 248 administrative villages.

Haikou is a national historical and cultural city, as well as a famous tropical coastal tourist destination. The main cultural attractions in Haikou are the Five-lord Temple, Hairui Tomb, Qilou Old Street, Xiuying Fort, and Qiongtai Academy. 

In 2019, the city's GDP reached 167.2 billion yuan ($23.57 billion),  an increase of 7.5 percent over the previous year. By industry, the added value of the primary industry stood at 7.1 billion yuan, a decrease of 1.4 percent; the added value of the secondary industry was 27.6 billion yuan, an increase of 3.6 percent; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 132.5 billion yuan, an increase of 8.8 percent. The industrial structure continued to be optimized, and the ratio of the three industrial structures was 4.3:16.5:79.2.

By 2019, the city is home to 11 general higher education schools, one adult college, 49 secondary vocational schools, 114 ordinary middle schools, 158 ordinary primary schools, 811 kindergartens, and one special education school. The city has 1,078 medical and health institutions at all levels, including 64 hospitals.

In 2019, the city of Haikou received 28.203 million domestic and foreign tourists, an increase of 5.6 percent over the previous year, and the average per capita stay was 1.46 days. It hosted 292,100 overnight visitors, an increase of 11.4 percent, and nine new international routes, including Haikou to Osaka, Japan and Haikou to Almaty, Kazakhstan, were opened.

At the end of 2019, the city had 11 national A-level scenic spots, including 5 4A-level scenic spots and 36 star-rated hotels, including four five-star hotels.

Its convenient transportation further promotes the city’s tourism and economic development. Meilan International Airport lies in Meilan Town, Qiongshan, Hainan province, 25 kilometers away from the downtown area of Haikou. It is an important domestic airport that was constructed to the 4E standard of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

This fascinating city features stunningly beautiful scenic promenades, blue skies, seas, sunshine, sandy beaches, and coconut palm trees. With its strong tropical seaside charm, Haikou is becoming renowned for its high quality of life and for being a Chinese residential paradise.The climate of Haikou is warm and pleasant, with no winter season.  In 2019, the city's air quality ranked tops among the 168 Chinese cities, with 271 days of excellent air quality and 69 days of good air quality.
